Art Therapy: Unlocking the Therapeutic Power of Creativity

Art has long been used as a medium for self-expression and emotional processing. Creative expression can give people another way to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences—especially when words feel difficult.

Engaging in a creative process can create space for reflection, mindfulness, and the experience of flow. Painting, drawing, sculpting, writing, dance, music, and other forms of creative activity can also help people reconnect with playfulness and curiosity.

Creative work can become a tangible representation of thoughts and feelings, which may support self-awareness and insight.

Clinical note: Art therapy is a distinct mental health profession provided by appropriately trained art therapists. You do not have to be in formal art therapy to use creative activities as personal coping or self-expression tools.

Whether you consider yourself artistic or not, creative expression can be a meaningful part of emotional wellbeing.
