The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health

Social media has become a regular part of daily life for millions of people. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and others can help us stay connected, share information, find communities, and access entertainment. At the same time, the way we use social media can affect how we feel.

Comparison and Self-Esteem

One challenge is constant comparison. Social feeds often show carefully selected moments—vacations, achievements, relationships, bodies, homes, and celebrations—without showing the full reality behind them. Repeated comparison can contribute to feelings of inadequacy, lower self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, or the sense that everyone else is doing better.

Cyberbullying, Harassment, and Loneliness

Social media can also create opportunities for cyberbullying and online harassment, which may have serious emotional effects. For some people, spending a great deal of time online can also crowd out face-to-face connection and contribute to feelings of isolation or loneliness.

Using Social Media More Intentionally

The goal does not have to be deleting social media entirely. Instead, it can help to become more aware of how particular platforms, accounts, and habits affect your mood.

Social media can support connection, but it is not a substitute for the relationships and experiences that happen away from a screen. Creating a healthier balance can help you use technology without allowing it to take over your attention or your sense of self.

Try This

Explore the screen-time, focus, downtime, or app-limit settings on your phone. Choose one part of the day—such as the first 30 minutes after waking or the hour before bed—and make it social-media free for one week. Notice whether anything changes in your mood, sleep, attention, or stress level.
