Intrusive thoughts are unwanted thoughts, images, or impulses that can feel distressing, confusing, or disturbing. Having an intrusive thought does not mean you want it to happen or that it reflects your character.
One cognitive strategy is to label the thought for what it is: “This is an intrusive thought,” “This is an anxiety thought,” or “My brain is generating a threat-based thought.”
Labeling can create a little distance between you and the thought. It may also help you notice patterns and triggers without immediately treating the content of the thought as a fact.
Intrusive thoughts can occur in many people and may also be associated with conditions such as anxiety disorders and OCD. If intrusive thoughts are frequent, highly distressing, or interfering with daily life, a mental health professional can help you understand what is happening and identify evidence-based treatment options.
