Anger is a natural emotion. Problems arise when anger becomes overwhelming, frequent, or leads to behavior that harms you, other people, or important relationships.
Six Ways to Work With Anger
- Identify your triggers. Notice situations, people, thoughts, or physical states that tend to increase anger.
- Learn to regulate your body. Slow breathing, movement, meditation, and other grounding strategies can reduce physiological activation.
- Practice empathy. Considering another perspective does not mean excusing harmful behavior, but it can reduce automatic escalation.
- Communicate effectively. Use clear, direct language rather than attacking or shutting down.
- Take a break. Stepping away temporarily can help prevent impulsive reactions.
- Seek professional help. If anger is affecting functioning or safety, therapy can help identify patterns and build more effective regulation skills.
