Mindful Meditation: The How and Why

Mindfulness meditation involves focusing on the present moment and noticing thoughts, feelings, and sensations with less judgment. Although mindfulness has roots in contemplative traditions, it is also used in secular wellness and mental health settings.

Research has explored mindfulness-based practices for stress, anxiety, mood, chronic pain, and quality of life. One way mindfulness may help is by changing our relationship with rumination—the tendency to become caught in repetitive negative thinking.

Five Ways to Begin

  1. Start with a guided meditation. Instructions can make the practice easier when you are new.
  2. Try different approaches. Breath focus, body scans, visualization, and walking meditation all feel different.
  3. Create a consistent time and place. Repetition matters more than perfection.
  4. Use props if needed. A chair, cushion, or comfortable position is completely acceptable.
  5. Be patient and nonjudgmental. Wandering thoughts are part of meditation, not proof that you are doing it wrong.

Apps such as Calm, Headspace, Insight Timer, and Simple Habit have offered guided practices that can help beginners explore meditation.
