It is not uncommon to feel like you do not have anything to talk about during a therapy session. Here are a few places to start.
- Talk about your week. Even when nothing feels significant, ordinary events can reveal emotional patterns or stressors.
- Talk about how you feel in the moment. Your present experience is valid material for therapy.
- Talk about your goals. Revisit why you came to therapy and what you want to be different.
- Talk about your past. If you feel comfortable, explore experiences that may still affect the present.
- Talk about the silence itself. Sometimes “I don’t know what to talk about” is a useful starting point.
Therapy is collaborative. You do not have to arrive with a perfectly organized agenda.
Try this: Keep a small notebook or note on your phone during the week for thoughts, feelings, questions, and events you may want to bring into your next session.
