The Power of Self-Compassion

In a world that often emphasizes high standards and self-criticism, self-compassion offers another way to respond to ourselves. It means treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you might offer a friend facing a difficult moment.

At the core of self-compassion is the recognition that everyone makes mistakes, faces obstacles, and experiences pain. Rather than berating ourselves for flaws or missteps, we can acknowledge our humanity and respond with kindness.

Two Ways to Practice

  1. Write a self-compassionate letter. Address a situation where you felt inadequate or made a mistake. Offer yourself kindness, understanding, and encouragement.
  2. Try loving-kindness meditation. Sit quietly and repeat phrases such as, “May I be kind to myself. May I be patient with myself. May I give myself space to grow.”

Self-compassion takes practice. With repetition, it can become a meaningful source of support and strength.

Morning prompt: Write a compassionate affirmation on your mirror: “I am worthy of love and understanding, just as I am.”
